New Motorsport UK rules for 2022 - Fire Extinguishers

New for 2022, Motorsport UK have implemented some changes to the Fire Extinguisher regulations for both racing and rallying.

On the outside, it looks a little complicated so we drill down to try and make it simple for you.

As always though, we are always here to help so if you are unsure, please feel free to drop us a message and we will help you through the process.

What’s new

  • From 01.01.2022 all vehicles that require a plumbed in fire extinguisher, must be fitted with a system that is present on one of two available FIA lists:

FIA Technical List No16

FIA Technical List No52 (standard 8865-2015)

  • Your fire extinguisher must be no older than 10 years old (in most cases – there are systems out there that have a 16 year life) and must have been serviced in the past 2 years, by a service agent approved by your systems manufacturer.

Pardon?

So previously, for MOST of you, you could run a system simply approved by Motorsport UK but now, they are aligning with the FIA on many safety requirements and this is the latest introduction.

Your system – in your car, will need to be on either of those lists and which list will depend on what car you have, what you compete in.

In simple terms – Technical list No16 is the old FIA list to 1999 standards and Technical List No52 is the newer 2015 standard. It goes without saying that newer cars and those competing in International events or standards will need to have a system on the newer list.

And, as above – it needs to be checked regularly.

Following so far? Good.

So what do I need to do?

Maybe nothing.
Firstly, we cannot cater for all disciplines so check the regulations for yourself as to which you need.
But in a nutshell:

  • Most Circuit/Competition Cars
Many competition cars on the national circuit will simply need to be fitted with a system from Technical List 16. It will also need to be serviced by an approved manufacturer agent (not your local fire extinguisher firm).
  • Most Rally cars
Many rally cars on the national circuit will simply need to be fitted with a system from Technical List 16. It will also need to be serviced by an approved manufacturer agent (not your local fire extinguisher firm).
You do have to also make sure the system is a minimum of 3kg if it is a Gas system.
You also need a handheld – which you already know – just a reminder the minimum weight for that is 2.4L if AFFF or 2kg if Gas. But read on…
  • WRC, R5, R2, WRX, GT3, RG-T, TCR and all international competition cars
If you are running a currently homologated car in international competition or on an event that complies with FIA regulations, then your system will need to comply to Technical List No52. This is because it is the newer list, with more stringent safety requirements.
