Brake fluid is the part of the braking system people think about least and rely on most. When you press the pedal, it's the fluid that carries that force through the lines to the calipers. It doesn't compress, so all your effort goes into clamping the pads onto the disc, right up until it gets too hot and boils. Once that happens you get a soft pedal, brake fade, and in the worst case a pedal that goes to the floor.
That's why not all brake fluids are the same, and why picking the right one matters more on a competition car than almost any other consumable. This guide covers the types of brake fluid, the difference between dry and wet boiling point, and how the racing fluids we stock compare, so you can match the fluid to how you actually use the car.
What Brake Fluid Does

The braking system is hydraulic. The pedal pushes fluid through the lines to the calipers and because the fluid can't be compressed, that pressure becomes a clamping force at the disc. Hard, repeated braking puts a lot of heat into the calipers, and that heat soaks back into the fluid. Get the fluid hot enough and it boils, and unlike the fluid, the vapour bubbles it creates do compress. That's brake fade: the pedal goes long and soft because you're now squeezing gas rather than moving fluid. A fluid's job is to resist that for as long as possible, which comes down to its boiling point.
Dry vs Wet Boiling Point, and Which One Matters to You
Every brake fluid has two boiling points, and knowing which one applies to you makes the choice much clearer.

Dry boiling point is the temperature fresh fluid boils at, straight from a sealed bottle.

Wet boiling point is lower, and it's the temperature the fluid boils at once it has absorbed moisture over time.
Glycol-based brake fluids are hygroscopic, meaning they draw in water from the air, and as that moisture builds up in the system the boiling point falls. The standard wet boiling point figure is measured at a set moisture content meant to represent a fluid that has been in service for a while.
Here's how to choose the right number:
In rally and racing, the fluid is changed often, usually well before it has absorbed enough moisture to matter, so for competition use the dry boiling point is the figure that counts.
Wet boiling point becomes far more relevant for a clubman driver on a tighter budget who isn't renewing fluid every event, and for a performance road car where the same fluid might sit in the system for a year or more.
So a top-level team chases the highest dry boiling point, while a club or road driver should pay closer attention to how the fluid holds up wet.
DOT Ratings Explained
Brake fluids are graded by a DOT standard, which sets minimum boiling points and other requirements for each type. The ones worth knowing:
DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are all glycol-based and are chemically compatible with one another. That said, Race and Rally don't recommend mixing brake fluids. For the best and most consistent performance, always flush the system fully and fill with fresh fluid rather than topping up with a different one.
DOT 4 is the common baseline for modern cars, and the racing fluids described as "super DOT 4" are glycol fluids built to the DOT 4 type but with dry boiling points far above the minimum.
DOT 5.1 is also glycol-based, with a higher minimum than DOT 4, and it stays compatible with DOT 3 and DOT 4 systems DOT 5.1 is also glycol-based, with a higher minimum boiling point than DOT 4. It's also a lower viscosity fluid, so it flows better at low temperatures and tends to suit ABS systems, which rely on fluid moving quickly through fine valving.
DOT grades set a minimum standard, not the actual performance. Two of the fluids we stock are DOT 5.1, and they sit at opposite ends of the range, one the entry point and one of the highest performers here, which shows the grade tells you the fluid meets a baseline, not how far above it the fluid actually reaches. The real comparison is the boiling point figures, not the DOT number.
DOT 5 is the odd one out. It's silicone-based, doesn't absorb moisture, and must never be mixed with glycol fluids. It's mostly used in military and some classic applications, and it's generally not suited to ABS or hard competition use, so it isn't what racing fluids are built on. It's worth knowing only so you don't confuse DOT 5 with DOT 5.1, which are completely different fluids despite the similar name.

The pattern is worth reading, because it's the whole point. Dry boiling point climbs up the list, but wet boiling point doesn't track it. The AP Racing Radi-CAL R4 has the highest dry point at 340°C, yet the lowest wet point at 195°C, so it's built for a team bleeding fresh fluid constantly rather than one leaving it in the car.
The Castrol React SRF is the clearest example of the opposite: a mid-table dry point of 320°C, but a wet boiling point of 270°C that towers over everything else here by more than 50°C. That's what SRF is known for, holding its performance long after other fluids have started to drop off as they absorb moisture, which makes it the standout when the fluid has to stay in the system. The Endless RF-650 shows the same balance to a lesser degree, a strong 328°C dry backed by the second-highest wet point at 218°C.
Which Fluid Is Right for You

Top-level racing. If you're renewing fluid regularly, chase the dry boiling point, since you'll change it long before the wet figure matters. The Radi-CAL R4 (340°C) and Motul RBF 700 (336°C) lead here. The Brembo HTC 64T is also in this bracket, but note it's a competition-only fluid and not road legal, so keep it to the race car.

Club motorsport on a budget. If you can't renew fluid every event, don't just buy the highest dry point you can afford. A fluid that holds a strong wet boiling point serves you better as it ages, and this is where the Castrol React SRF makes a strong case. Its 270°C wet point is the highest in the range, so it holds up longest as it absorbs moisture.

Performance road cars. For a fast road car that sees the occasional track day, wet boiling point matters most, since the fluid sits in the system for a long time. The Endless RF-650 suits here well. It has a high wet boiling point, and as a lower viscosity DOT 5.1 fluid it flows better through the fine valving of an ABS system, which most modern performance cars run. The Castrol React SRF is also worth considering, since that same high wet point suits a road car leaving fluid in for months at a time.
