Running Costs
The optimisation of running costs is always a priority for Citroen Racing. This information, which is key to our customers, remains one of the hardest to precisely establish as many factors come into consideration. Relying on the data we gathered during the thousands of kilometers run by Citroën C3 R5, in testing or in customers rallies, we intend to give you figures as realistic as possible. However, all figures listed below must be considered as informative. Their goal is to provide a general idea of Citroën C3 R5 cost per kilometer. Fluids are not included in the calculation.
Chassis and Ground Connection
Just like its sister in WRC, the Citroën C3 R5 has two different front suspension geometry, one for tarmac and one for gravel. In the end, the car is totally optimised for both surfaces, without compromising on performance.
Engine and Gearbox
Built internally, the engine is a critical piece on the development process of the car. Citroën Racing technical staff focused on three main categories,
- Reliability and thermic performance with the sophisticated internal parts of the engine.
- The cylinder head for an improved permeability for both intake and exhaust.
- Electronic system, with a great step-up allowing a better anti-lag system, which translates into a better throttle response. It also allows to be near the turbo maximum allowed, without opening the pop-off.
Olivier Masorelly : "With hard work and ingenuity, we built a great engine, which is one of the key advantages of the car. Drivers' feedback highlight a strong torque as well as great power".
The C3R5 is fitted with a Sadev gearbox thats been specially designed for the specific requirements and constraints of the category. Alough some of the components are familiar, and therefore tried and tested, Citroën nonetheless chose to design their own architecture. The packaging is different in terms of both the width and the height of the gearbox outlets. This is because they have a direct influence on the transmission angles, and therefore the maximum travel allowed. Citroën Racing have paid very special attention to this point.
Development
The evelopment of a rally car happens in different phases. From the first drafts in the research department early 2017 to more that six thousand kilometers of intensive testing on all surfaces and conditions before the official launch.
Talented international drivers and co-drivers have contributed and still contribute to the development of the C3 R5 : Stéphane Lefebvre, Yoann Bonato, Craig Breen, Kris Meeke, Yohan Rossel, Paolo Andreucci, Simone Tempestini et Mads Østberg. Their feedbacks and experience have been critical to the success of the development.
However, the seek of performance and reliability is a never ending process. Hence, Citroën Racing technical staff are always working on making the C3 R5 the best rally car possible.
EASE OF MAINTENANCE
Citroën Racing were equally determined to ensure the best possible maintenance conditions for the C3 R5, whilst also paying special attention to the durability of the parts selected without compromising on performance.
For example, the gearbox and front end can be removed very easily. Citroën Racing have also made a lot of progress on the bodywork by investing in multi-material technology so that there are rubberised components in all the lower parts of the bumpers and in some areas on the wings. They are therefore more resistant to wear and distortion. Similarly, Citroën Racing covered a lot of miles in tests on really rough gravel surfaces such as at Fontjoncouse, and noted a vast improvement in the ageing of the body and all of the subframe. Damage to consumable parts, like the protective skidplate, is at a really very good level and that is undoubtedly a plus for running costs.
